After my last travels in Cambodia, i was searching for another project in Africa; something as great as the project i undertook in the Mondulkiri jungle and which i would remember all my life. 

I finally found an elephant relocation project in Zimbabwe, to which i applied for straight away.

Unfortunately, this project was already fully booked, even if the relocation was supposed to begin a year later. I asked to be on a waiting list, convinced that someone would cancel. And that's exactly what happened a month later. So, i booked without hesitation.

As I knew i'd be soon in Zimbabwe, i decided to organise a visit in Hwange national park, sadly famous for the death of Cecil the lion, killed by the American dentist and the poisoning of lakes with cyanide. I have written about this lower in this article. 

After i explored the place ( Stanley and Livingstone private game reserve) and met a great team, we decided to camp in the park. Yes, in the bush, surrounded by wild animals. During this night, a hyena came to see us whilst we were eating dinner but left quickly. We also had the chance to admire thousands of stars and even the Milky Way.

After this night, we finally began the relocation. I was very impatient, as were the other volunteers. We were very excited. By the end of the experience, we moved 10 bull elephants in 5 days, which was more than expected. 

The Stanley and Livingstone private game reserve is completely fenced and secured but this area is not always sufficient when the animals reproduce well. In this case, the elephants were too numerous for the park and that was dangerous for the other species and plant diversity. 

We relocated only lonely bulls to avoid traumatising females which live in groups. The elephants were moved to Zambezi National Park, which gave them access to Chobe National Park in Botswana. 

Of course, they lost the protection which they benefited but at least, they are alive!  Indeed, without our intervention, they would have been killed. We can consider that we gave 10 elephants a chance to live.

Nevertheless, elephant's population is decreased constantly as an elephant is still killed every 15 minutes. Stanley and Livingstone private game reserve is, unlike other parks, very well secured due to a breeding program of rhinos, benefiting other species of a better protection against poaching.

Being volunteer, for the entire duration of the operation i had to :

-cut trees to give the truck access to the elephant

-refresh the elephants with water to keep their body temperature from rising

-take blood samples

-check heart rate, temperature and respiration rate

-take pictures of their footprints

Of course, being a group of 19 people, we shared the tasks. 

This operation was emotional. Some elephants, once darted, tried to hide in running deep into the bush to escape the helicopter. That quickly became a problem for the  truck which wasn't able to reach the place to take the elephants. So, we had to cut trees to allow access to the truck. We had to keep the elephants asleep during this time, but above everything, we had to maintain their body temperature. 

When the water supplies have been depleted, we helped the elephants to regulate their temperature by other means, in flapping their ears. This required three pairs of hands.

That's definitly a project i will remember forever. I met amazing people and had the time of my life.

To reach Hwange National Park, i rented a car as i did in South Africa the month before. The same car as i was a bit scared to drive in a foreign country, and worse, on the left side of the road. When i arrived at the car rental agency, the employee told me that she had a surprise for me. She gave me a bigger car that the one i booked, a Ford Ranger! 

I was very happy with that car. Firstly, because i discovered the joy of driving a big car. Secondly, because i was going to Hwange National Park that, unlike South African parks, was impraticable with a normal car (i really didn't think about that when i booked the Hyundai i10)) With the Hyundai i10 i booked i wouldn't have made more than 100 meters. I've been very lucky they gave me a 4x4. 

I was curious to see this famous park where Cecil the lion was killed. I wasn't disappointed! 

To reach the park from Victoria Falls airport, it tooks me 3hours. During those 3hours (on straight road) i saw only 4 other cars. There were no shops and only a gas station when i arrived in Hwange city. Fortunately, i didn't have a problem on my way as there was no one, in sight. Only nature. 

After 30minutes, i lost radio signal. If you didn't take a CD, then you will not have music during your ride. 

I decided to enter in the park via the Sinamatella entrance, the first camp accessible from Victoria Falls. To access Sinamatella, you have to pass through the mines. And then, you see a signal which indicates that elephants can cross the road. As we don't have such a signal in Belgium, i stopped the car the time to take a picture of it. I was very surprised when i looked at the result. An elephant was crossing the road just behind the signal when i took the picture. 

Once in Sinamatella, i was expecting security guards to check my car, my luggage, etc. They even didn't ask the reason of my presence. In reality, the only thing they were interested about was the fact that i was a woman ALONE. They had never seen a lonely woman visiting the park. So i went through a long questioning:" Where is your husband?", "How comes you are alone in Zimbabwe?", "Is someone gonna reach you?", " Why are you here alone?" 

To see the animals and the nature wasn't a sufficient reason for them. It was so unusual that during the next few days, the rare tourists that i met asked me: "Are you the belgian girl?"

In Sinamatella, my only option was a lodge for 80€ a night. I tried to book but nobody replied to my emails. I finally called them to make a reservation. The line wasn't good. I had to call them 3 times, then make a bank transfert and wait 3 months to receive a confirmation. If you want to do the same, call them in advance! English is also the only langage they speak.  If you don't have a reservation, there is little chance that they accept you for the night. 

The lodge was big and clean but old. I wanted to wash my hair but my lodge didn't have a shower. There was  also only cold water. So,i put my hair into a ponytail.

Contrariwise, the view from the lodge was just amazing. The lodge is on the higher ground and gives you a great view on the park.

Vegans, don't forget to take food with you! I stayed 3 complete days foodless. The restaurant at Sinamatella camp has a very small menu and offers only meat. The closest city is at least 1h away and that going there doesn't mean you will find food. Instead,  i spent 3days drinking beer! 

After a very quiet first night, i left the lodge around 6am.  As i said earlier in this article, i was very happy with my car. Since the entering the park, i have encountered big holes, big stones, and also broken bridges. This means first you go down in the dry river before ascending on the other side. To help you, they put stones in the dry river!^^ Really forget the Hyundai i10!^^

I had a map of the park which indicated the water points, main roads and secondary roads. My goal was to reach Main Camp, at 125km as the crow flies. Despite the distance, i chose secondary roads thinking that i would see more animals than on the main road. First of all, secondary roads mean narrower roads and less maintained. Then, yes, you can see more animals and water points but also poachers! 

When i saw a signal directing me to a water point, i decided to go in that direction to see if maybe i could see animals. One in two warer points were dried upand not all were natural. There was a big turn and i didn't see there were poachers at their tent just further along. There were 3 of them, busy drinking coffee, a riffle in hand. One of them had a military shirt on, while the other 2 were dressed like civilians. They looked at me, popeyed, and at that time, i had only 2 options: speed up and leave the place quickly or drive to them with little chance to succeed!^^ I chose to drive on for my own security and left tooting my car horn to frighten the animals around. I was fortunate the poachers had no vehicle. 

The problem of that park and many others is that the rangers who work there are underpaid. They are often involved in poaching. So when i met a guide with a group of tourists near Main Camp, and the guide asked me if i saw an animal around, i said i hadn't seen any, even though i just saw a lioness. Telling him was a probability for her to become a target. I had no reason to tell him about the poachers either. 

I arrived in Main camp before the park closed and i received the key of my chalet.

There was no wifi in the Main camp, unlike Sinamatella camp.

I went to my chalet which was , like the lodge in Sinamatella, clean but old. I had a sink in my room. I was impatient to have a shower and wash my hair. When I asked the employee about the shower, she said:"the showers are in the men's toilet!" In women's toilet, there were only a bathtub and once again no shower. 

At the restaurant, same story! Only meat and eggs. I shared my last vegan biscuits the hostess gave me during my flight with the squirrels near the reception. 

The next day, i left early and went back to Sinamatella. I discovered another way. After 5hours of driving, my legs were very painful. I needed to leave the car to stretch my legs. However, that's forbidden! I thought that i could jump of the car at the next water point to have a better view of the surroundings.

On my way, i overtook a group of giraffes. They tried to cross the road but that was impossible because of the trees. My gopro, fixed on the car, recorded giraffes running ahead of the car. 

Once at the waterpoint, where i was supposed to stretch my legs, i found a group of 8elephants drinking. They seemed so serene and i couldn't feel my toes anymore. So i quietly got out of the car. They looked at me, curious, but directly returned to their activities, without being worried about me taking pictures. 

When back in Sinamatella,and with the key of my lodge in the pocket, i checked if i had a shower in my room. MIRACLE! I had an italian style shower. I was so tired after all my adventures and after driving for so long, a shower was welcome! Unfortunately, the water was freezing cold. I hesitated... Take a shower quickly or wait until tomorrow, hoping for hot water. I finally took my shower and did well because the next day, i had to brush my teeth using water from my water bottle. Not a drop left in the lodge. I didn't complain. Those people are not even paid. However, 80euro a night without water... 

After the final night, i drove back in direction of Victoria Falls to take part to the elephant relocation.

To reach Devil's Pool, i had to cross the border into Zambia, have a boat trip and swim in the falls! When i got there, at the beginning of august, the flow was still strong. Usually, you can't go to Devil's Pool before the end of August, or September, as the level of the water is low. The group had to swim in a line. If you stepped aside, you could take the risk of being carried away by the current.

Don't forget your waterproof camera and a suitable swimsuit. Personnaly, i didn't anticipate all this. Wearing the low necked swimsuit meant swimming upstream with only one arm asi was holding on to my swimsuit with the other one. Fortunatly, i'm a good swimmer.

Don't miss it! It's really worth it!

Après le Cambodge, je recherchais un projet en Afrique, quelque chose d'aussi sympa que le projet auquel j'avais participé dans la jungle du Mondulkiri et dont je me souviendrais toute ma vie.

C'est là que je découvre un projet de relocalisation d'éléphants au Zimbabwé, auquel je postule sans hésiter. Malheureusement, il n'y avait déjà plus de place et le projet avait lieu dans plus d'un an. Je décide donc de demander à être sur liste d'attente, persuadée que quelqu'un finirait par se désister. C'est ce qu'il s'est passé 1 mois plus tard et j'ai donc sauté sur l'occasion.

Tant qu'à être au Zimbabwé, je me suis aussi organisée une petite visite du parc Hwangé, tristement célèbre à cette période suite au scandal de la mort de Cecil le lion par le dentiste américain et les empoisonnement de lacs au cyanide. J'en parle en bas de cet article.

Après la découverte des lieux (Stanley and Livingstone private game reserve) nous avons fait du camping dans le parc privé. Durant cette nuit, une hyène est venue nous rendre visite pendant notre repas, et nous avons eu la chance de comtempler des milliers d'étoiles dans le ciel. J'ai d'ailleurs pu réaliser quelques photos de la voie lactée. <3

Après cette nuit,nous avons enfin débuté la relocalisation. J'étais très impatiente, comme les autres volontaires. On ne tenait plus en place. Au total, nous avons déplacé 10 éléphants sur 5 jours, ce qui était plus que prévu par l'équipe organisatrice.

Le parc de Stanley and Livingstone est complètement clôturé et sécurisé mais sa surface n'est pas toujours suffisante lorsque les animaux se reproduisent bien. Dans ce cas-ci, les éléphants devenaient trop nombreux pour le parc, et cela devenait dangereux pour d'autres espèces d'animaux et/ou de plantes. Nous avons donc délocalisés des mâles solitaires pour ne pas traumatiser les femelles qui vivent en groupe. Les éléphants ont été déplacés vers un parc national, le Zambezi national park, qui leur donne accès au parc Chobe au Botswana. Certes, ils n'ont plus la protection dont ils bénéficaient mais ils sont au moins en vie! En effet, sans cette intervention, il aurait été tués! On peut donc se dire que nous avons donné une chance de vivre à 10 éléphants.

Néanmoins, la population d'éléphants diminue constament puisqu'un éléphant est tué toutes les 15 minutes. Le parc Stanley et Livingstone est, contrairement à d'autres parcs, très bien sécurisé en raison d'un programme de reproduction de rhinocéros, faisant bénéficeir toutes les autres espèces d'une plus grande protection face aux braconniers.

En tant que volontaire, j'ai du couper des arbres, raffraichir les éléphants avec de l'eau pour qu'ils gardent une température raisonnable, faire des prises de sang, contrôler les pulsations cardiques, la température, la respiration, faire des photos de leurs pattes pour pouvoir reconnaître leurs empruntes... tout au long de l'opération. 

Niveau émotionnel, nous avons eu notre compte! En effet, certains éléphants  se sont enfoncés plus profondément dans les boispour échapper à l'hélicopter qui les survolait pour l'anesthésie, ne donnant pas d'accès au camion prévu pour le transport. Nous avons donc du couper plus d'arbres pour lui donner l'accès, garder les éléphants endormis durant ce temps mais surtout maintenir leur température corporelle. Lorsque nos réserves d'eau étaient épuisées, nous les avons aidé à réguler leur température de manière manuelle; c'est à dire en faisant aller leurs oreilles. (3 paires de mains nécessaires)

Pour ce genre de projet, une vidéo est beaucoup plus parlante. Je vous laisse donc découvrir la vidéo que j'ai réalisée et qui retrace chaque étape de la relocalisation.

Pour me rendre à Hwangé, j'avais, comme en Afrique du Sud, réservé une voiture ; la même pour être habituée. Arrivée à l’agence de location, la dame m’a dit qu’elle avait une surprise pour moi et que j’allais avoir une voiture plus grosse que celle réservée. De la Hyundai i10 réservée, je suis passée au Ford Ranger ! Le prix de la location de voiture est beaucoup plus élevé au Zimbabwé ! Pour 4 jours et une Hyundai i10, vous payez 65 euro en Afrique du Sud et 260 euro au Zimbabwé. Pour vous donner une idée, un Ford Ranger au Zimbabwé peut vous couter 300 euro par jour !

Soit, j’ai été heureuse de mon Ford Ranger ! D’abord parce que c’est très agréable à conduire et ensuite parce que j’allais au parc national Hwangé, qui contrairement aux parcs sud-africains, est resté très nature et impraticable avec une voiture normale. (Il fallait le savoir ! Je n’ai vraiment pas pensé à ça lors de mes réservations) Avec la Hyundai i 10, je n’aurais pas fait 100 mètres. Une chance donc qu’elle m’ait donné un 4x4 !

J’étais curieuse de voir ce fameux parc où Cecil le lion a été tué. Je n’ai pas été déçue ! Déjà pour y arriver depuis Victoria Falls, j’ai mis 3 heures. Sur ces 3 heures de route (toujours tout droit) j’ai rencontré 4 voitures, aucun magasin ; juste une station essence en arrivant à Hwangé « ville ». Heureusement que je n’ai pas eu de problème en route car il n’y a rien ni personne ; juste de la nature à perte de vue. Apres 30 min de trajet, vous perdez même le signal radio. Si vous n’avez pas de cd, vous n’aurez pas de musique pour votre trajet ! J’avais décidé de rentrer dans le parc par l’entrée Sinamatella, le 1er camp accessible depuis Victoria Falls. Pour accéder à Sinamatella depuis Hwangé, il faut traverser les mines! Il y a bien évidemment un petit contrôle mais rien de méchant. Et puis vous voyez ce panneau de signalisation qui vous indique que des éléphants pourraient traverser. N'ayant pas ce genre de panneau en Belgique, je me suis arrêtée pour faire une photo. Qu'elle ne fut pas ma surprise en regardant le résultat de découvrir qu'un éléphant traversait juste à ce moment là derrière le fameux panneau!
 

Arrivée à Sinamatella, je m'attendais, comme en Afrique du sud, à ce qu'on fouille ma voiture, mes bagages, et qu'on me pose un tas de questions sur la raison de ma présence. En réalité, tout ce qui les tracassait était que j'étais une jeune femme SEULE! Ils n'avaient jamais vu de femme seule visiter le parc et ne comprenaient pas trop. J'ai eu droit à un interrogatoire à ce sujet. Si bien que durant les jours qui suivèrent, les rares touristes que j'ai rencontré sont venus me voir en me disant "are you the belgian girl?".

A Sinamatella, ma seule option était le lodge, pour 80 euro la nuit. Je voulais réserver mais aucun de mes mails ne recevait de réponse. J'ai donc téléphoné au Zimbabwé, 3x! Bien à l'avance évidemment et en anglais. Si vous n'avez pas de réservation, il y a peu de chance que vous ayiez un logement pour la nuit parait-il...

Le lodge etait propre et bien grand mais vieux! Je voulais me laver les cheveux, mais il n'y avait pas de douchette à la baignoire et pas de douche! Et puis que de l'eau froide! J'ai fait une queue!

Par contre, la vue depuis les lodge est magnifique! Ils sont en hauteur et vous offrent une vue sur le parc.

Végétariens, végétaliens, prévoyez le coup! Je suis restée 3 jours complets sans manger! Le restaurant de Sinamatella offre une très petite carte et uniquement de la viande! Etant donné que la ville la plus proche est à 1h30 de route en voiture et que cela ne vous assure pas de trouver de quoi vous nourrir, j'ai passé ces 3 jours à la bière!

Après une nuit très calme, je suis partie à l'aventure dès 6heures du matin. Et comme je le disais plus haut, j'ai été vraiment heureuse de cette voiture! Dès l'entrée, des gros trous, des grosses pierres, ... et puis plus loin des ponts détruits, ce qui m'a obligée à descendre juste à côté du pont dans le lit de la rivière sèche. Ils avaient un peu rebouché le trou avec d'énormes pierres... Hyundai i10, pas moyen!^^

J'avais reçu un plan à la réception qui m'indiquait les divers points d'eau et les routes principales et secondaires du parc. Mon but était d'atteindre Main camp, à 125km à vol d'oiseau. Malgré la distance, j'ai choisi les routes secondaires en me disant que je verrais sans doute plus d'animaux que sur la route principale. D'abord route secondaire signifie, route beaucoup plus étroite et moins entretenue, ensuite, oui, il y a plus de points d'eau et d'animaux mais aussi des braconniers.

En effet, alors que je vois un panneau m'indiquant un point d'eau (1 sur 2 est à sec manque de moyens.Ils ne sont pas tous naturels), je décide d'aller dans cette direction pour voir si il y a des animaux. Le chemin tournait très fort et dans le virage, je suis tombée sur 3 braconniers appuyés sur leur fusil, entrain de boire une tasse de café devant leur tente. Un d'entre eux portait une chemise style militaire, les autres étaient habillés en civil. Ils m'ont regardée l'air ébahi et 2 options s'offraient à moi à ce moment: passer la 4ème et déguerpir vite fait ou tenter le strike avec peu de chance d'y arriver!^^ J'ai choisi la sécurité mais suis partie en klaxonnant pour faire partir les animaux qui se trouvaient dans les parages. Ma chance est que ces braconniers étaient à pied! Le problème de ce parc est que les rangers qui y travaillent ne sont pas rémunérés, ou très en retard et le salaire est maigre. Ils sont donc souvent impliqués dans le braconnage. Dès lors, lorsque j'ai rencontré un ranger avec un groupe de touristes près de Main camp, je lui ai dit que je n'avais croisé aucun animal alors que je venais de voir une lionne. Rien ne me servait non plus de parler des braconniers...
 

Je suis arrivée à Main camp avant la fermeture du parc et j'ai reçu les clefs de mon chalet.

Alors que le wifi était disponible à Sinamatella, il n'y en avait pas à Main camp... Cherchez l'erreur! Je suis allée à mon chalet qui comme à Sinamatella était propre mais vieux, avec un évier dans la chambre. J'étais impatiente de prendre une douche et là on m'a dit : " les douches sont dans les toilettes des hommes!" Dans les toilettes des femmes, il y avait les mêmes baignoires qu'à Sinamatella, sans douchette! chouette! Je n'ai toujours pas lavé mes cheveux! Au restaurant de Main camp, meme histoire, de la viande ou des oeufs. J'ai laissé tomber! J'ai partagé mes derniers petits biscuits végétaliens de l'avion avec les écureuils près de l'accueil de Main camp.

Le lendemain, je repartais tôt, vers Sinamatella, en empruntant un autre chemin pour voir plus. Après 5 bonnes heures de route, je ne sentais plus mes jambes, il fallait que je sorte! Seulement c'est interdit. Je m'étais dit:" au prochain point d'eau, tu descends". Sur la route, j'ai d'abord surpris un groupe de girafes. Elles ont voulu traverser mais il y avait des arbres et des buissons de l'autre côté. Ma gopro fixée sur le capot de la voiture a donc filmé des girafes qui courent devant la voiture.

Arrivée au point d'eau où je devais me dégourdir les jambes, j'y ai découvert un groupe de 8 éléphants entrain de boire. Ils avaient l'air paisibles et je ne sentais plus mes orteils, je suis donc descendue calmement. Ils m'ont regardée l'air curieux, mais sont vite retournés à leurs activités sans se soucier de moi qui les prenais en photo!^^

De retour à Sinamatella, les clefs de mon lodge en poche, je suis vite allée voir si j'avais une douchette... et la, oh miracle, j'avais une douche italienne! J'étais morte de fatigue après tous ces kilomètres et ces aventures et une douche était donc la bienvenue! Et là, j'ouvre l'eau chaude à fond, je mets la main sous l'eau... Elle était glacée! Là, je me suis demandée si je faisais l'effort de la douche froide ou si j'attendais le lendemain matin dans l'espoir d'avoir de la chaude. J'ai fini par prendre ma douche froide et j'ai bien fait! Le lendemain, j'ai du me brosser les dents à l'eau en bouteille! Plus une goutte d'eau dans le lodge! Je n'ai rien dit; ces gens ne sont même pas payés! Mais 80 euro la nuit sans eau ou à l'eau froide, c'est fort quand même!

Après cette dernière nuit, je me suis redirigée vers Victoria Falls.

Pour l'atteindre, il faudra traverser la frontière jusqu'en Zambie, faire un petit tour en bateau et nager dans les chutes! Lorsque j'y suis allée début août, le courant était encore fort. En général, on ne peut y aller qu'à partir de la fin du mois. Le groupe doit nager en file indienne. Si vous vous écartez du chemin conseillé, vous risquez fort d'être emporté par le courant! Attention donc. Mais ça en vaut la peine!!! Attention, ne pas oublier l'appereil photo waterproof et prévoir un maillot adapté! Moi, je n'avais pas prévu tout ça, alors le maillot super échancré à contre courant, ça ne marchait pas. Obligée de nager à 1 seul bras puisque je retenais mon maillot avec l'autre... sans ça, je perdais le maillot dans sa totalité!^^ Avec l'appareil photo waterproof attaché à mon bras, je vous laisse imaginer ma traverser. Heureusement que je suis bonne nageuse... :P

Concrètement, Devil's pool, c'est l'attraction à ne pas rater qui va vous mettre dans tous vos états.
